5 things you need to know before you buy art

1 | work out what you like

You may already know exactly what works you are drawn to but do you know where to source works that fit your style AND budget? Gather together a Pinterest board, some screenshots or save some instagram posts to see an overview of colours, themes and artists you love to see if there is a common theme. I’ve had clients who like anything to do with landscapes and particularly the ocean so they had a range of paintings, photographs and prints that reflected this while other clients loved to support local, upcoming artists whose stories resonated with them. Your style will be unique to you and can form the basis of finding your interior style.

2 | Where to buy art.

Whether it’s an artwork you have saved for years for or something cheap and cheerful, there are so many options for where you can find art to fit in your budget. I like to balance out my more expensive purchases with some thriftier purchases from second hand stores or by framing something more decorative. For more in depth info, see Where to buy art.

3 | Where to find art under $150

The thrill of the chase of works under $150 is exciting for some and stressful for others. I have a list of a few artists that I admire but I also recommend exploring group show options like Incognito Art Show or Affordable Art Fair that have a range of artists and artworks that will fit within even a modest budget.

4 | How to hang art.

Before you purchase art, it’s important to have a good idea of the spaces you have available (of course this can all go out the window that you find something that you MUST HAVE). To get started I recommend you create some simple sketches of your available walls to make sure you get the right size and shape.

5 | ATTEND A WORKSHOP

Bringing together my love for art, interiors and teaching interior design my Winter Workshop - Art for interiors is a one stop shop to nut out the above as well as meeting other art lovers looking to buy timeless art for their budget.
